Using Griffith's Valuation

This is an invaluable genealogical guide and census substitute to where people lived and to what property they held. Griffith's Valuation is the Primary Valuation of Ireland which was published between the years 1848 - 1864. It was based on the productive capacity of land and the potential rent of buildings. It is arranged by County, Barony, poor law union, civil parish, and townland, and lists every householder and occupier of land. Griffith's Maps are also accessible and searchable online.

Information to be found in Griffith's Valuation includes:

• Name of occupier
• Name of landlord or 'immediate lessors'
• Description of tenement (e.g. house, office, land)
• Area of land held, valuation of buildings and total holding
• Map reference numbers which are linked to the Six inch to one mile Ordnance Survey maps, which show the location of the holdings.

How to search :

• Name Authority:
  Authority searching will locate records where the name of an occupier or lessor matches the searched for entry. Searching for 'Ryan Mary' locates records where either the occupier or lessor is Mary Ryan
• Townland List:
  View records of occupiers and lessors of property in particular townlands. Searching for 'Lismore' locates 379 records to browse through
• Name Keyword:
  Keyword searching locates occupiers and lessors and allows for the combining of name elements
